What is report?
Report Text

Definition of Report
Report is a text which presents information about something, as it is. It is as a result of systematic observation and analysis

Purpose:

To provide detailed information about the way things are or were.
To help readers/listeners understand what is being described by organizing or categorizing information.

Generic Structure of Report

1. General classification: Stating classification of general aspect of thing; animal, public place, plant, etc which will be discussed in general

2. Description: Describing the thing which will be discussed in detail; part per part, customs or deed for living creature and usage for materials

Language Feature of Report
• Introducing group or general aspect
• Using conditional logical connection; when, so, etc
• Using simple present tense

Example:

Many people call platypus duckbill because this animal has a bill like duckbill. Platypus is a native Tasmania and southern and eastern Australia.
Platypus has a flat tail and webbed feet. Its body length is 30 to 45 cm and covered with a thick, and woolly layer of fur. Its bill is detecting prey and stirring up mud. Platypus' eyes and head are small. It has no ears but has ability to sense sound and light.
Platypus lives in streams, rivers, and lakes. Female platypus usually dig burrows in the streams or river banks. The burrows are blocked with soil to protect it from intruders and flooding. In the other hand, male platypus does not need any burrow to stay.

Conditional sentences Type I

Type I (Future Possible Condition) :

e.g. :  If she invites me, I will go to her party.

= Should she invite me, I will go to her party.

 FUNCTION

The type 1 conditional refers to a possible condition and its probable result. These sentences are based on facts, and they are used to make statements about the real world, and about particular situations. We often use such sentences to give warnings. In type 1 conditional sentences, the time is the present or future and the situation is real.

EXAMPLES

• If I have time, I'll finish that letter.
• What will you do if you miss the plane?
• Nobody will notice if you make a mistake.
• If you drop that glass, it will break.
• If you don't drop the gun, I'll shoot!
• If you don't leave, I'll call the police.

In type 1 conditional sentences, you can also use modals in the main clause instead of the future tense to express the degree of certainty, permission, or a recommendation about the outcome.

EXAMPLES

• If you drop that glass, it might break.
• I may finish that letter if I have time.
• If he calls you, you should go.
• If you buy my school supplies for me, I will be able to go to the park.

Note on “OTHERWISE”

Type I     :   If you don’t study hard, you will not pass the exam.

         You must study hard otherwise you will not pass the exam.

Note on “UNLESS” à jika subjek tidak/ kecuali jika

Unless = if ….. not

If he does not get sick, he will certainly join us in the game.

= Unless he gets sick, he will certainly join us in the game.

Passive voice class XI SMK

Passive voice adalah kegiatan atau tindakan tanpa menyebut kan pelaku

Subject + finite form of to be + Past Participle (3rd column of irregular verbs)

Example: A letter was written.

When rewriting active sentences in passive voice, note the following:

·       the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence

·       the finite form of the verb is changed (to be + past participle)

·       the subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive sentence (or is dropped)

Conditional II	Active:	Rita	would have written	a letter.
	Passive:	A letter	would have been written	by Rita.

Examples of Passive

As you can see in the examples, adding by Rita does not sound very elegant. That’s why it is usually dropped.
